I saw this post on Instagram the other day from a woman that said "CrossFit taught me the least interesting thing about my body is how it looks" andI have not been able to stop thinking about it.
I could not understand why this post kept resurfacing because I have done so much work over the years on loving my body as it is. So why would this post cause such a ruckus in my mind!? Then it hit me in the shower this morning, I am not immune to bad body image days as I thought I was. Those times tend to hit me in specific places or times.
When I am buying new hard pants or trying to find a dress for a fancy occasion. I still dread the changing room and have to repeat "clothes are meant to fit your body not your body into clothes" until I leave the store. It can be exhausting.
The time in my day that I do not think about HOW my body looks is when I am in my CrossFit gym coaching or training. I am surrounded by people doing fitness with the sole purpose of being better humans. Each of these athletes look different but it matters not because it is really difficult to care HOW someone looks when you are bent over breathing heavy after finishing a tough workout. We end up celebrating what those bodies DO and talking about how we can improve.
Where is that space for you? Where is it that you feel so comfortable and happy to be in your body? This isn't a CrossFit is the best and only place to feel comfortable in your body, (though I do think you'd love it here). I want you to find that space because it has helped me navigate those other spaces where how my body looks tends to determine my worth, you know like the internet.
As we enter this holiday season that so often brings us in contact with those that share their opinions freely about our bodies my hope is that you loudly and proudly celebrate all the things your body CAN DO!
